The Truth About Your (Lack Of) Distance

Posted on June 9, 2016

Golfers say all Brad Whalenthe time that they think they should be able to hit the ball farther than what they actually achieve.   Most would be right.  A big portion of problem lies in the fit, or lack thereof, of the golfers’ driver.

Here are the facts. The average male golfer has a club head speed of 94mph. Not bad considering we are taking averages from all walks of life, all body styles and ages. This average male golfer should be able to carry the ball 228 yards with a total distance of approximately 255 yards depending on the landing conditions.

This average golfer has hit the ball 250, maybe 255 yards on one or two occasions.  Unfortunately, we want this rarity to be an average distance and not a best ever distance (which golfers tend to think of as their average but that’s another topic).

The TRUE average for the average male golfers’ drive is 204 yards carry and approximately 226 yards, again depending on the ground conditions.   The reason for this 30-yard shortfall is the fact that the golfer has not optimized their launch conditions with their driver.  Such a waste of club head speed.

Obviously golf swing is to blame for some of these golfers. However, for most golfers, it is simply the lack of a proper fitting.  If they would take the time to get fit correctly, they would see an increase in their distance. Even if they can only increase their distance by 10 yards this would make a big difference in their game. 10 yards longer is one less club into the green resulting in more greens hit per round and more chances at pars and birdies.

Take the time to be fit for your clubs. The fitting fee will be worth it … when you invest in perfectly fit clubs that have been perfectly built just for you … you will get years and years of optimal play.   A real savings for you, not to mention to the real joy in your new game.

Do you want to start Maximizing your Distance?

Maximizing Distance.VC-420-Beauty-250

Everyone wants to hit the ball 30 yards farther. Very few people come in and say “I would just like to hit my driver straight every time”.

We would like to able to do this for everyone however this is not as easy as people think it might be. Swing speed is very difficult to increase. The guarantees of 15,20 or even 30 yards coming from certain companies are simply not true. The USGA has limited the ball speed off the clubface since the early 2000’s.  Drivers are just simply not hitting the ball farther.

That being said sometimes a golfer is using a driver which is just so bad for them that it is possible to gain that 30 yards, but it’s not as often as people want it to be.

Sure we could fit you for a driver which is 3 inches longer. The odd occasion when you do manage to hit the middle of the club with a square clubface you might get a little more distance out of it. However, your average driving distance will come down due to the fact that the golf club is just too inconsistent.

A common mistake is that a softer flex of shaft will increase distance, but testing has shown this to not be true. More importantly is the weight of the shaft. You should be able to make your best swing and have that shaft work for you. If the shaft is too heavy or too light you will lose control and thus lose distance.

The shaft must also match up to your tempo, load and release characteristics and of course your clubhead speed. This is not as simple as saying an “A” flex will give you more speed. Especially since there is no industry standard for shaft flex. One companies “A” flex may be another companies “S” flex. Sometimes there are even differences in flex within a company’s different lines of shafts, confusing matters even more.

A driver that is properly fit will enable you to hit the middle of the club consistently. This will increase your AVERAGE driving distance giving you the confidence to hit the ball harder and farther, without the fear of losing it offline as often. Simply put you will be able to hit your best drives more often.

Our fitters are some of the very best in the industry and will be able to help you find the perfect driver head and shaft combination that will maximize your distance AND accuracy.
